The protagonist of The Terminal is trapped in an airport for nine long months and the principal character in Miljenko Jergović’s latest novel flies across the globe for thirty incredible years. His name is Babukić and he set out into the world in the early days of the last war in our country, fleeing Zagreb, a job in the Yugoslav National Army and his pregnant mistress, via Brnik Airport in Ljuljana, far, far away. It was on his first flight to Frankfurt that he acquired the talent to adopt a new language as soon as he hears it and that everyone – from customs officers, to flight attendants and fellow passengers – unspeakably believed him.

Babukić’s adventures are akin to Švejk’s or Don Quixote’s. Touring the world countless times without ever leaving the airport or the plane, he carefully listened to fantastic and incredible tales of people of all races and religions – from a Dagestani witch, to the Swedish anthropologist Olsson, to Dinko Mikuličić, the son of Udba’s most famous killer, with whom he would meet the end of the world at Belgrade’s airport.

Babukić the Vagabond and His Time is a modern-day picaresque novel reflecting our fears, terrors, obsessions with sex, gossip, food and drink… Miljenko Jergović has crafted a piece of writing in which Eros and Thanatos, the possible and the impossible touch and connect in the manner of Rabelais, Swift or Heller, and his Babukić the vagabond, both caring and vain, fearful and brave, is a true hero of our time.
