After he caused quite a stirr in domestic literary scene with his short story collection Groblje manjih careva (Josip and Ivan Kozarac Prize, 2010) and novel Roki Raketa (T-portal Literary Prize, 2014), Zoran Malkoč has established himself as one of the most powerful and unique voices of contemporary Croatian prose with his most recent book of short stories Superman is Dead.

Superman is Dead is not just a title - it's also a news line and sort of awakening, a turning point and a revelation of Malkoč's credo as an author. And if the superheroes are only unmasked when dead (as we're told by these stories), the only thing left for the mortals after such death is - to grow up.

Indeed, after the first in a series of superhero deaths, that of Josip Broz Tito, Malkoč's characters in this book undergo an accelerated course of growing up. They rebel and dream, believe and get disappointed, they betray and are betrayed - before, during and after the war - until finally, in their adulthood, they run out of superheroes.

Trying to answer the eternal question - What is man? - the author ruthlessly questions what is lesser and what would be greater than "man" - superhuman and subhuman. And that is a quest that does not look into something extraordinary, but rather in human destinies that are intimate and recognizable to all of us. Poetry intertwined with cruelty, a tenderness that balances on the edge of the blade, the humor that freezes blood in the veins ... in Malkoč's writing they are perfectly balanced, finding their ideal form in ideal proportions.

"Zoran Malkoč is not a madman, as would average reader think after reading these stories for the first time. On the contrary, Zoran Malkoč is a genius." - Davor Šišović, Glas Istre

"Cruel, devastating, insane, beyond the dark and good taste, soulless and headless, such is the inhuman world offered by Malkoč, who in turn belongs to the category of genius writers." - Culturamas

"Warning: Zoran Malkoč's stories are tingling and biting, and sometimes boil over the icy sea we all carry within. The secret to his survival in times after the war in Croatia is the desperate humor and natural compassion he feels for his characters." - Jordi Puntí

"Before you buy this book, think twice, be sure to have a medical exam and, just in case, check your blood pressure. But if you are sure you can handle the laughing dead, don't stop reading it, as this is one of the best books recently translated into Spanish . " - M'Sur
