A narrator – and in this case a woman narrator – with a voice as powerful and strong as Magdalena Blažević’s is truly rare. Her short stories are imbued with the burden of pain, sorrow, misery and female point of view, they stem from the heart of darkness, but undoubtedly narrate a universal female experience. The girls and women in the microcosm of Celebration are both heroines and victims, they create the world, nothing is possible without them, but equally so they can defend their world before male violence, belligerence, primitivism.

Magdalena Blažević’s women are both virgins and witches, because of them the world is born and created, maintained and ruined. In her debut Celebration the author has cherry-picked twenty-five stories which resort to different, primarily female experienced to speak about human relationships, family secrets, death, the river taking lives away, madness, sexuality and carnality. Stylistically crafted and painstakingly precise, these stories rummage the hidden corners of one’s thoughts, the parts controlled by Id, without which there is no great art. Celebration is a string of opal beads: Magdalena Blažević manages, time and again in each story, like a precious gemstone, to reveal all the colours of the spectrum, not only the dominant black.
