It is 2084. It is a close and by no means beautiful future, a world destroyed by wars, apocalyptic and hopeless, a world described in his latest book by one of the finest contemporary writers of our region, Josip Mlakić. His world spans today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina in this future, after a series of wars, divided into three countries with firm, fortified borders, three habitats for three nations. A world strewn with drones, where people mostly travel by foot.

Of Gold, Men and Dogs is a triptych on hopelessness and a quest for hope where hope no longer exists. In every part Mlakić painstakingly describes a world in which a man is not a wolf to another man, but rather a wild dog. There is no hope in it, but each of his protagonists nevertheless searches for it, be it an old man, a Croatian war veteran, who naively thinks his leader, he messiah, will cure his retarded son, or a boy Mirza who accidentally survives a diversion by the monument to a great Muslim leader and manages to get hold of his long escaped father who is searching in vain and rinsing gold, or conscript Petar who refuses to conduct a pointless killing, which leads him to being enrolled in an elite military unit led by the Colonel.

Every image in Of Gold, Men and Dogs perfectly depicts a pessimistic and destroyed future world, which is only an allegory and our present brought to the utter limits.
