It is already a widely known fact that Miljenko Jergović can create inspiring and marvelous stories from just about anything. And those stories are not just any kind of stories, they are always strongly connected and important to the peculiar times we live in. Being a master storyteller, whose unique erudition cannot be matched, in Hercules Jergović gives us a story of near future - a very realistic but grim and frightening portrayal of the possible things to come.

Somewhere in Croatia, a country which more and more resembles a dystopian society drifting into collapse and where nothing works, except the unstoppable football team that keeps on winning, one tragic encounter and one football match set off a series of events, causing a domino effect that leads to unrelenting eruption of anger and hatred on a wider scale.

Jergović intertwines the stories of two seemingly different characters which both are trying to escape their destinies. One is a migrant who doesn’t belong anywhere anymore and who throughout his life struggled with the burden of his national identity, the other an ardent nationalist for whom the nationality is the true measure of character.

With passing pages, the novel gradually slides into caricature and grotesque or, better to say grotesque becomes true reality which shifts into complete breakdown. Hercules is a humane answer to the enormous hatred that occupies our lives and public space, a book about minorities and those unwelcomed individuals. Disclosing a spiral of hatred that is destroying the communities we live in and that is spreading globally becoming more and more a dominant mindset, the novel is a strong and necessary voice against any type of fanaticism. It is a reprimanding satire against all types of nationalism and fascism. This is the book dark and hilarious at the same time, from which the troubled future of the world emerges, a story that will make you cry, laugh and horrify you all at once.

Zamolili smo ga da za nas izdvoji pet knjiga koje bi svakako trebalo pročitati, pet naslova koje smatra posebno vrijednima čitateljske pozornosti. Ovo je njegov izbor.
