Roman legions have long since conquered Judea and the surrounding countries, while the Jews are awaiting an emissary and at the same time plotting a rebellion against their traitor king and Roman conquerors. Among many prophets one stands out in his approach: it is Jesus. Countless books have been written about him, he is a protagonist of many novels, and although we have very few historical records from that time, thanks to material proofs we know a lot. Josip Mlakić decided to write a novel from the perspective of one of the most obnoxious characters from the Bible, the Jewish rebel Barabbas, the one whose life Pontius Pilatus spared. Writing his Gospel According to Barabbas Mlakić creates an image of Judea and the life of Jesus from a different perspective, realistically introducing us not only to the historical but also to the political dilemmas of his heroes, the same ones we know from apocryphal and canonical gospels.

Mlakić’s Gospel According to Barabbas is a novel about Jesus and the rebellion, a novel about the preservation of the Temple and the construction of a new one; it is equally a historical and a modern novel about human vices, betrayal, doubts and ideals. The Gospel According to Barabbas is a novel that forces its reader to think about the fundamental questions of man’s existence and small steps that show his humanity.

“Mlakić is a master of the non-violent overturn of that which is self-evident and a non-violent asker of fundamental questions.” Ivan Šarčević

The Gospel According to Barabbas powerfully and unstoppably draws the reader into the vortex of the story, so that the majority of readers will re-read it again and again, completely or partly, constantly discovering the details that conceal higher truths and life." Goran Gavranović
