Renowned composer Viktor, who works in the Netherlands and Croatia, comes to spend the hot summer on an island, writing music for Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. While he is trying to catch the music vibrating on the island, he listens to the stories around him – the stories of natives, old women in front of the pastry shop, a young woman who is waiting for the return of her sailor husband, young men and women on the beach, archeologists who are researching the bay, arguing couples, highschool graduates who are falling in love, and other picturesque characters inhabiting the island during summer. His story entwines with theirs, all of them making a tight net in which events from past and present, brief sighs and long-lasting memories are caught. Searching for inspiration, Viktor has no idea that he is on Ariel’s island, and that Ariel is interfering with lives of the protagonists in the year when he receives Titania, queen of the fairies.
Ardura is a novel about summer, love, waiting, arrivals and departures, about art and life, fantastic and real, and through the stories of Viktor and Ariel, Sanja Lovrenčić has put together present and past, possible and impossible, the way it happens every summer on every island. Ardura is a novel in which stories numerous characters shimmer just like the sea, long lasting and unforgettable.
